Man robs bank for medical care
“First time I've ever been in trouble with the law. I'm sort of a logical person and that was my logic. That's what I came up with.”
That is how James Verone says he decided to rob a North Carolina bank last week.
He had no gun and he handed the teller a note asking for just $1. He then went back and told the teller: 'I'll be sitting right over here on the chair waiting for the police.'”
The teller called 911.
So why so much trouble for a dollar?
“’Cause I wanted to make it known that this wasn't for monetary value but it was done for medical reasons,” Verone said.
Verone says he has multiple health problems and no medical insurance. At 59-years-old, and with no job and a depleted bank account, he thought jail was the best place to go.
Verone is hoping for a three year sentence. He says he would then be able to collect social security when he gets out. He then plans to head to the beach.
“I've already looked at a condominium. I've spoken to a realtor -- on Myrtle Beach,” he said.
Verone says he’s getting good medical care in jail but has been accused by the jail’s doctor of manipulating the system.
“If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care,” he said.
