Maryland officials move forward on toll increase
June 3, 2011 - 05:56 pm
(AP, ABC7) The Maryland Transportation Authority has given preliminary approval to increasing tolls on the Bay Bridge, tunnels in Baltimore and other roads.
Under the proposal, approved Thursday, the cost of a trip across the Bay Bridge would double to $5 from $2.50. The toll for Fort McHenry and Harbor tunnels would go from $2 to $3, effective Oct. 1.
Transportation officials say the increases are needed to maintain aging bridges and roads. The Bay Bridge toll hasn't gone up since 1975 and is actually lower today than when the original span opened in the 50s.
Public hearings will be conducted over the summer. The public can also submit comments on the web at www.mdta.maryland.gov.
