BALTIMORE (AP) - Vendors are warily watching the supply of Maryland crabs as they approach what's expected to be a spike in demand around the July 4 holiday.

The Baltimore Sun reports that there have been plenty of crabs to go around this season, but the supply could be stretched thin by the holiday.

The price of a bushel of male crabs could top $200 in some places.

Despite cold weather that scientists say killed many crabs in the state, crabs have been plentiful so far this summer. Still, they could become scarce by the holiday.

Larry Simns, longtime president of the Maryland Watermen's Association, said that they typically become hard to find around July 4.
