ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Montgomery County's inspector general says he will investigate the Board of Education's budgeting process for the upcoming fiscal year.

The announcement by Inspector General Edward Blansitt comes after a $14.5 million surplus was discovered in the final days of budget negotiations. According to The Washington Examiner, county council members say they learned about the surplus after the budget was approved on May 26. However, County Executive Ike Leggett says he learned about the surplus in the trust fund used to pay for employee benefits in April.

In a memo released on Thursday, Council President Valerie Ervin asked Blansitt to evaluate the reliability of the school board's monthly financial reports, along with documents the school system submits annually.

The fiscal year begins on July 1.
