Students will compete all week in five different categories to show off their original research and presentations. The categories include performance, documentary, website, research paper and exhibit.

A group of Iowa students has done original research on Mary Beth Tinker who was among the students sent home from school in 1965 for protesting the Vietnam War in a case that made it to the Supreme Court.

Historians and educators will judge the projects.

The top exhibits from each state will be featured at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History at a reception Wednesday. The overall winners are announced Thursday at the University of Maryland.
