Norton to host National Dance Day on National Mall
WASHINGTON (AP) - Demonstrators who want to dance on the National Mall have an ally in Congress.
District of Columbia Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton says she's working with TV producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe from "So You Think You Can Dance" and others to host National Dance Day on July 30.
Flash mob dances at the Jefferson Memorial the past two Saturdays have drawn action and arrests from U.S. Park Police. Officers are enforcing a court decision that prohibits dancing at memorials.
Norton says she was glad police showed restraint and avoided arrests during the most recent dancing demonstration.
Norton says the drama over dancing is a wake-up call to provide more participatory activities on the National Mall. She says National Dance Day will include a flash mob dance - with a permit.
