Field trip sends 24 students to hospitals
Two dozen Charles County Public Schools students had to be taken to local hospitals Thursday to treat heat-related symptoms after a field trip to a baseball game, which was cut short after an onslaught of heat-related illnesses.
The students from schools in Charles County, Md., were at an end-of-year field trip to a Blue Crabs baseball game at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.
A number of students were having trouble with the heat before noon, Charles County schools said in a statement. Emergency Services personnel were called to the stadium.
A total of 82 patients were treated, with 24 taken to hospitals. Students from Calvert County Public Schools and St. Mary’s County Public Schools also attended the game.
The school canceled the remainder of the field trip and bused all students back to their schools. Students were taken to cooling stations with ice and additional water until they boarded buses back to school.
Andrews Air Force Base and Anne Arundel County also sent mass casualty units to assist.
