Prince George's wants to lure Redskins to move to the county
Prince George’s County wants to become the home of the Washington Redskins. And not just on game days at FedEx Field.
County Executive Rushern Baker III is working with county and state officials to fund a feasibility study to assess the potential impact of luring the Redskins into moving the team’s headquarters and training facility to land adjacent to Bowie State University.
Team officials have expressed concern about the distance from their training facility in Ashburn, Va. to FedEx Field, a trip of about 50 miles that can take from a little over an hour to nearly two hours depending on traffic.
Baker noted that in the original agreement bringing the Redskins and FedEx Field to Prince George's County, the county was granted the right of first refusal if and when the team chooses to relocate its headquarters from Ashburn.
"Prince George's County has been proud to host the players and fans of the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field," Baker said. " With our central location in the region and the Redskins existing facilities at FedEx Field in Landover, we believe that Prince George's County offers an excellent choice for the Redskins' management, staff, coaches, and players to work and live.”
On May 31, the county government sent a letter to the Maryland Stadium Authority requesting the feasibility study.
The county has committed one third of the estimated $25,000 cost of the study. Matching amounts would be expected from the State of Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. (DBED) and the Maryland Stadium Authority.
The proposed site would be on land owned by the county off of MD Rt. 197 and Lemons Bridge Road, close to the Bowie State MARC station.
