The State's Attorney for Maryland says that the man who tried to kill a Montgomery County Police officer by setting his apartment on fire will "never get out of prison alive" after he was sentenced to 11 consecutive life sentences on Wednesday.

Attorneys say that Raven Michael Masters, also known as Joseph Angelo Wimbush, was sentenced to 11 consecutive life sentences, plus 40 years, after being convicted on 24 counts of first-degree attempted murder and 24 counts of first-degree arson.

Police and fire officials say that Masters, a 30-year-old Hyattsville resident, set fire to the Germantown apartment of Officer John Distel as an act of revenge after Distel arrested him.

24 people, including six children, were inside the apartment building when the fire was set.

Distel arrested Masters on April 14 during a traffic stop. Over $1,500 and a lock picking set was found, connecting Masters to the robbery of a local plastic surgeon. He had also been cited six times in a one year span for driving on a suspended license and fourth-degree burglary. Those charges were dropped.
