WARSAW, Va. (AP) - Searchers have recovered the body of a Boy Scout who fell into the Rappahannock River during a weekend outing with his troop.
Richmond County Emergency Services Chief Greg Baker tells media outlets that 13-year-old Caleb Smith of White Stone was on a sandbar when he slipped into the water on Saturday. The teenager's body was recovered Sunday morning within 50 feet of where he was last seen.
Baker says several people tried unsuccessfully to rescue Smith but the current was strong.
Smith and other members of Troop 215 from Wicomico Church Episcopal Parish in Lancaster County were camping at Suggetts Point.
Missing boy scout's body found in Rappahannock River
A coast guard official says the body of a 14-year-old teenager was found Sunday morning. The boy scout had been missing since Saturday afternoon. He fell from a sandbar into the Rappahannock River near Suggetts Point.
Crews searched approximately 17 miles for more than six hours Saturday. The search was suspended at 10:30 p.m. but resumed Sunday morning at 8 a.m., a coast guard commander said. The Coast Guard used sonar-searching equipment.
Officials say the teenager was part of a Boy Scout troop spending the weekend on the river.
The Coast Guard was joined in the search efforts by the U.S. Fish and Game, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Richmond County Fire Rescue, Richmond County Sheriff Department, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Mattaponi Volunteer Dive Team.
