Chris Cummings mourned by family, friends at funeral
The mystery into who killed 20-year-old Chris Cummings, the Old Dominion student and nephew of Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, continues Sunday, a day after he was laid to rest in Baltimore.
Hundreds of students traveled for hours Saturday for a final goodbye, while the Congressman vowed to find the person who killed Chris.
"(It was) one of the hardest things I will ever do," Rep. Cummings said. "He had a mantra - love my soul."
Police believe this was a random shooting after someone broke into Chris' apartment and that he tried to fight off the gunman before being wounded. His roommate was also shot and injured, but has since been released.
Authorities are trying to determine whether the attack is connected with a botched robbery in the same apartment a few weeks ago. In that incident, Cummings successfully fought off the suspect.
But on Saturday, the focus was on friends and family mourning for their lost friend.
"I remember one time he was telling me, you have to cherish life," A.J. Aminrazavi, Cummings' fraternity brother, said. "Words can't even describe."
Chris was studying criminal justice at ODU.
