June 27, 2011 - 05:49 am
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - A new initiative in Maryland is trying to encourage communities to implement green, sustainable practices.
The University of Maryland and the Maryland Municipal League is announcing the new initiative on Monday.
Organizers say the program called Sustainable Maryland Certified is expected to appeal to smaller communities. They say it may earn participating municipalities preferences in competition for state and federal grants.
The program creates a point system. Points are earned by setting up programs to address issues like global warming, energy, pollution, land use and other concerns.
