Vincent Gray pledges funding for more police officers
WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington Mayor Vincent Gray says he plans to set aside $10.8 million to hire enough police officers to keep the city's police force at 3,900.
The Washington Post reports that Gray made the pledge Wednesday at a briefing for council members. It also comes after a recent announcement by Chief Financial Officer Natwar M. Gandhi, who says the district is expected to take in $107 million more than expected in the current fiscal year.
Police staffing in Washington has been a high-profile issue since Police Chief Cathy Lanier warned earlier this year at a D.C. Council oversight hearing that there would be trouble if the number of officers dipped below 3,800.
Gray says he will submit a modified budget to the council later this week.
