Brittany Norwood, Lululemon murder suspect, due in court
(AP, WJLA) - Brittany Norwood, the woman accused of murdering Jayna Murray at the Lululemon store in Bethesda, appeared in court Friday morning for what her lawyer called a "housekeeping" hearing.
Norwood is charged in the March murder of Murray, a coworker at the Lululemon Athletica shop. Police allege Norwood killed Murray during a dispute after Murray found suspected stolen merchandise in Norwood's bag.
She appeared in court in a tan jumpsuit. After four months in jail, her lawyer says she's doing relatively well.
“I think she's doing pretty well under circumstances,” Douglas Wood, Norwood’s lawyer, said.
Norwood has a status hearing set for Sept. 2 and a trial date set for Oct. 24.
Police say Norwood tried to conceal the homicide by tying herself up and blaming the attack on two masked men who she said entered the store after it closed.
Norwood's lawyer says that they may be looking into competency issues as they move toward her trial date.
“In a serious case like this you have to explore every possibility. As you go along you discover certain things in the case,” Wood said.
Wood says his investigation is still ongoing and no final strategy decision has been made.
The Lululemon store reopened last month after a prolonged closure. One customer said another high-profile case has kept her interest.
“We follow Casey Anthony 24 hours a day and I kind of want to see what's happened to this girl behind bars,” said customer Nicole Hilton.
“I would I like to see her be accountable in some way or another,” said Barbara Carlson in Bethesda.
