Capital Bikeshare to build 32 new stations
Capital Bikeshare will install 32 new stations in fall 2011 and will expand the size of some existing stations. It will also add 265 bikes to the system.
Capital Bikeshare is peddling as fast as it can to stay ahead of its rapidly expanding user base. Users say it can't happen soon enough.
Yenmai Xia says she loves Bikeshare but is frustrated when no bikes are available or there's no room to drop off her bike at the end of the trip, forcing her to find another bike station.
“Usually in the morning it's very hard to find bikes and hard to find parking spots in the morning in rush hour and reverse in the afternoon during rush hour, too,” she said.
From January to March, Capital Bikeshare had 148,000 riders. In the second quarter of the year, that figure more than doubled to 347,000.
“Sometimes you don't find a bike and have to walk to the other station to find a bike,” said Elizabeth Diaz.
Karyn Leblanc says she rely on a mobile phone app that shows which stations are full, which are empty and which ones have bikes available.
“It really helps me determine if there's bikes available, if there's docks available and if not then I can make a decision,” she says.
Terry Bellamy, director of the D.C. Department of Transportation, said the expansion would increase capacity by 22 percent in downtown D.C. and 80 percent east of the river.
Along with the D.C. expansion, 30 additional stations are set to be installed in the Rosslyn/Ballston area as well.
