MANASSAS, Va. (AP, ABC7) - Thousands of Civil War re-enactors have braved scorching heat to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Bull Run.

The participants turned out Saturday in Manassas to re-enact the Civil War's first major land battle. Re-enactment events will also continue Sunday.

Joseph Robertson, the battalion chief for the Prince William County fire and rescue service, said nearly 150 people were evaluated, mostly for heat-related illnesses. He says 11 people were taken to hospitals, but none of the patients were believed to be critical.

Robertson says officials had planned for the event for a year and had prepared for hot temperatures.

Civil War events changed due to heat

The schedule for the commemoration in Manassas was changed due to heat and humidity, the U.S. Park Police said.

An artillery firing demonstration took place at 1 p.m., but all musket and artillery demos after that have been canceled. In addition, the scheduled performance by the Quantico Marine Corps band at 7 p.m. has been called off. The concert will now feature the Fort McHenry Guard Fife and Drum Corps.

All occur as scheduled. The Visitor Center, Henry House, Stone House and Brawner Farm House will remain open.

A heat wave that has spread from the Midwest to the Northeast has blanketed parts of the country, including the Washington, D.C., metro area with temperatures above 100 degrees.
