Colesville Road reopens after police-involved crash in Silver Spring
Updated: July 19, 2011 - 05:53 pm
A portion of Colesville Road (Route 29) in Silver Spring has reopened following an investigation into a car accident involving a police cruiser.
Shortly before 12 a.m., Montgomery County Police Officer Brendan Hopkins, 25, was responding to a service call when the marked vehicle he was driving collided with another car at the intersection of Sligo Creek Parkway and Colesville Road.
According to Montgomery County police, the cruiser was heading southbound on Colesville Road, when, for some unknown reason, the vehicle spun around, crossed the median and struck a Corolla on the northbound side. The impact of the crash pushed the Corolla into a driveway, where it crashed into two parked cars.
Police say the driver of the Corolla, identified as Yvonne Wilson, 62, of Hyattsville, had to be cut from the vehicle. Another passenger in the car, identified as Lorenzo Wilson, 66, also of Hyattsville, was in the backseat. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries, and are still receiving treatment at Suburban Hospital.
Officer Hopkins also sustained non-life threatening injuries, but has been released from the hospital. He is a one-year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department.
This part of Colesville Road was closed for several hours as authorities conducted an investigation at the scene.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.
