D.C. teacher's union chief to meet with Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson
WASHINGTON (AP) - The head of the Washington Teachers' Union says he plans to meet this week D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson to discuss exceptions for teachers fired last week because of poor evaluations.
Saunders tells The Washington Examiner that he is meeting on Thursday with Henderson to discuss exceptions that were made for four teachers and to see if more teachers can apply for exceptions. The school system announced last week that it was firing more than 400 employees for poor performance and failure to meet licensing requirements.
This is the second straight year that the school district turned to mass layoffs under the teacher evaluation system, known as IMPACT.
The chief of human capital for DCPS has described the four exceptions as "very specialized cases."
