Drunk driver hits police car, injures officer in Frederick
Updated: July 6, 2011 - 09:46 am
A drunk driver was arrested on DUI charges after he rear-ended a police cruiser sending the car across lanes of traffic and into a guardrail on Route 15 in Frederick, police say.
Ofc. Keith Donovan was injured in the wreck, which occurred just past Rosemont Avenue around 3:48 a.m. Wednesday. He was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment. There’s no word on the extent of his injuries or his medical condition at this time.
The driver, 27-year-old Kevin Dodds, of Clifton, Va., was not injured in the crash. Responding officers gave him an alcohol breath test that showed he was .11 over the legal .08 limit. Dodds is being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center. He expected to appear before the District Court Commisioner.
Police say Dodds was speeding when he struck Donavan’s car from behind. The impact forced the officer’s car to hit a guardrail, then careened across all lanes of traffic and strike another guardrail on the opposite side of the road.
An accident reconstruction team is investigating.
