Five hurt after tree falls in Garfield Park

All five victims who were injured when a tree fell on them have been discharged from the hospital, the daughter of People’s Church Reverend Teresa Stratton, Jasmine Stratton, told ABC7.

The victims, including three children, were hurt after a large tree fell on people in Garfield Park in SE D.C. Tuesday afternoon.

The tree fell about 1:45 p.m. in the park, located in the 600 block of 3rd Street SE. Authorities report the adults victims suffered from serious injuries and the children suffered from serious but non-life threatening injuries.

“Today was fun day in the park, but it turned out anything but fun,” Teresa Stratton, of the People’s Church, said. “We heard a crack and it just came down.”

The victims were transported to a local hospital.

A church summer camp group was having a "day in the park" when the tree suddenly snapped and fell on them.

The most seriously injured was a 17-year-old, who was knocked unconscious. Three other victims were between 6-year-old and 8-years-old and one was 51.

"Many times we've had branches fall on a park like this,” Bill Phillps, Friends of Garfield Park said. “You wish it didn't happen of course."
