Gene Gillette: Mount Rainier police officer, indicted
The Mount Rainier officer who allegedly lured a 20-year-old man to his home to be in a pornographic video, then shot him when he tried to flee, was being investigated for a similar incident, authorities confirm.
Gene Gillette, a 3 and ½ year veteran with the police, faces 12 counts of attempted second-degree murder, attempted voluntary manslaughter and multiple counts of assault and sexual offenses. A grand jury indicted the 27-year-old Tuesday on multiple charges, including attempted murder and sexual offense, in connection with a July 2 shooting in Capitol Heights.
Sources tell ABC7 that on July 2, the victim in the shooting, a 20-year-old man, was lured over to Gillette's residence when he was told there would be girls there to shoot a pornographic film.
Once the victim arrived, he found no girls at the residence. Instead, sources say, Gillette wanted him to perform sexual acts with him. When the victim tried to flee in Gillette's personal car, the officer opened fire, hitting him four times and seriously wounding him.
"I couldn't believe this could happen to my son,” said Irving Hall, the victim’s father. He says he immediately thought his son was innocent when he heard from him at the hospital.
"He said ‘Dad, that not true,’ he was writing laying in bed, telling us what happened," Hall said.
"You took the law into your own hands... And you were convicting my son,” Hall says about Gillette.
Gillette originally said that he had shot the victim in self-defense while he was being carjacked. He later claimed that the relationship was consensual and he acted in self-defense because he was being robbed.
Sources confirm that Gillette, at the time of the July 2nd shooting, was already being investigated for another incident where he allegedly discharged his weapon in his home.
In that case, the claim is that Gillette tussled with a man who he'd lured to his home on the false pretense of a Go-Go concert after-party.
The victim claims that when he realized Gillette wanted to perform fellatio on him he tried to get away, sources say.
A fight ensued, sources says, and the man discharged Gillette's weapon. Nobody was hit.
“We are certainly asking at this point for the public to contact us if there are any further victims or any information which may aid us in this investigation or others,” said Angela Alsobrooks, the State's Attorney for Prince George's County.
Sources say that investigation is not complete.
In the meantime the state's attorney wants tips about Gillette emailed to : email@example.com.
Gillette was Officer of the Year
Mt. Rainier Police Chief Mike Scott says that Gillette, an Iraq War vet, was a two-time Officer of the Year, earning the honor in 2009 and 2010. He called him a "very proactive" cop and said he was very disappointed.
“Nothing in his personal life that we knew about led us to believe that he was anything less in his personal life than he was as an officer on the street,” he said.
However, a Northeast D.C. resident says she was harassed two years ago when Gillette arrested her. She took video of the incident with her cell phone.
Charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest against her were later dropped.
Gillette has been suspended without pay.
"We don't take lightly our responsibility to enforce the law - even against a law enforcer," Alsobrooks said in a statement. "No one is above the law."
According to sources, Prince George’s County police almost immediately doubted Gillette’s story because others came forward to report that they too had been assaulted by Gillette in the past.
Scott says he knows of no such claim.
“We had no inkling whatsoever that he was involved in anything like that,” Scott said. “At all.”
