A Germantown toddler died early Monday morning, a little over 12 hours after the girl had been found unresponsive in a bathtub. Montgomery County’s homicide detectives are now investigating the case, police said.

The girl was taken to an area hospital in an unconscious and unresponsive condition Sunday afternoon. Sources told ABC7 that doctors at Shady Grove Hospital were able to get a pulse and the girl was airlifted to Children's Hospital Sunday.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the child was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. Monday morning, police said.

Family members had left the 11-month-old unattended in the bath tub for a brief period of time, police said. A family member checked the child and found her unresponsive.

Neighbors in the 18000 block of Cottage Garden Drive in Germantown were alerted and tried to save the child’s life. Montgomery County Fire Captain Oscar Garcia told ABC7's Kris Van Cleave that units were called at 2:53 p.m. for a possible drowning.

The District of Columbia Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy. Montgomery County Child Protective Services will investigate this incident.
