Harry Thomas Jr. responds to loan allegation

WASHINGTON (AP) - A D.C. Council member has to respond to an allegation he didn't pay more than $15,000 in student loans and interest.

A judge set Friday as the day Harry Thomas Jr. has until to submit an answer in the case.

A lawyer representing the government, Thomas Mauro, says Thomas incurred the debt by taking out two federally guaranteed student loans in 1983 and 1984. The loan amount is $5,345.20, and the rest of the money is interest.

The lawsuit isn't the only one Thomas is facing. In a separate matter, city officials accused him of misusing more than $300,000 in city money.
