Harry Thomas scandal: Three councilmembers call on Harry Thomas to resign
WASHINGTON (AP) - Three D.C. Councilmembers are calling on their colleague Harry Thomas Jr. to step down.
Thomas is accused of spending $300,000 on a luxury SUV, golf, travel and other personal matters. The Ward 5 Democrat is also under federal investigation and could face criminal charges. Thomas has denied wrongdoing, but agreed last week to pay back the district funds.
The latest councilmember to ask Thomas to resign is Tommy Wells, a Democrat representing Ward 6. Wells says in a statement that Thomas "clearly diverted" city funds "for unacceptable purposes" and should step down "for the good of our city as well as the integrity of the Council."
Councilmembers David Catania and Mary Cheh have also asked Thomas to resign. Mayor Vincent Gray and Council Chairman Kwame Brown have not.
