Hearing set on motion to dismiss charges against Md. Senator Ulysses Currie
BALTIMORE (AP) - A federal judge will hear arguments on whether to dismiss the remainder of the bribery charges against a Maryland state senator accused of using his influence to benefit a grocery store chain.
After federal prosecutors dropped nearly half of the charges against Sen. Ulysses Currie in May, saying they duplicated others in the indictment, his attorneys moved to have the rest of the charges dismissed. A hearing is set for Monday morning before U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett.
The Prince George's County Democrat was indicted in September on charges of bribery, conspiracy and extortion. He pleaded not guilty.
Currie is still charged with accepting bribes from Shoppers Food Warehouse and lying to federal investigators. His trial is scheduled to begin in September.
