July 15, 2011 - 10:04 am
The Washington Capitals are keeping one their young defensemen in the fold, signing Karl Alzner to a two-year contract Friday.
The 22-year-old Alzner played in all 82 games for the Capitals last season, scoring two goals and adding 10 assists. He was one of only three defensemen in the NHL aged 22 and under to play all 82 games in 2010-11.
Mike Vogel of WashingtonCaps.com says that the deal is worth $2.57 million.
"We feel he's an important part of our defensive core who logs critical minutes against other teams' top players," Capitals general manager George McPhee said.
Alzner was the Capitals first round draft pick in 2007.
