Maine Avenue construction to start Monday
Construction will start on Maine Avenue Monday, the District Department of Transportation said Friday.
It plans to widen the Southwest trail and resurface the eastbound roadway along the south side of Maine Avenue Southwest between the northbound 14th Street Bridge ramp and 12th Street Southwest.
There won’t be any on-street parking during the construction phase, which is set to be completed by mid-October. Lanes will be reduced from two to one, but eastbound Maine Avenue will remain open expect for temporary overnight closures. Sidewalks on the south side of Maine Avenue will be closed. The Maine Avenue Fish Market will be accessible only from the 9th Street area.
The project will replace the existing 4-foot-wide sidewalk with a new 14-foot-wide trail for both bicyclists and pedestrians, and replace the existing road surface. The slew of construction includes new storm water drainage elements, bio-retention areas, trees, lighting, signs, curb, gutter and fencing.
Construction will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and may occur on weekends between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., DDOT said.
