Man killed in car crash
A man was struck and killed in a car crash in Prince George’s county. Police have identified the victim as 23-year-old Vernon Matthew Gamble from Southeast Washington.
Prince George's County Police Spokesperson Cpl. Henry Tippett says that the cause of this crash appears to be pedestrian error. Police believe the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol when he tripped and fell into the roadway on Ritchie Road near Central Avenue.
He was struck by two cars, the first driven by a woman and the second by an off-duty MPD officer in his personal vehicle. Both drivers remained on the scene. Cpl. Tippet says the off-duty MPD officer reported the crash using his police radio and requested an ambulance for the victim.
Police describe Ritchie Road as dark and say the pedestrian was not in the crosswalk when he was struck around 11:53 p.m. The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.
Prince George’s county police are investigating.
