Md. trooper, Bowie woman injured in Prince George's crash
A Maryland State Police trooper and a Bowie woman were injured in a traffic accident Saturday morning in Prince George’s County.
Sheila W. Hopkins, 64, of Bowie, was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the Prince George's Hospital Center. She was later transferred to a hospital in Baltimore. Her injuries are serious, but not life threatening, police say.
Trooper First Class Darwin R. Bennett, 24, was taken by ambulance to Bowie Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Police say that shortly after 7:30 a.m., Bennett was dispatched to a call for a traffic crash in Bowie. He was responding routinely and did not have his emergency lights or siren activated.
Bennett was traveling northbound on Rt. 301 when he entered the intersection with Queen Bridge Road and collided with the vehicle driven by Hopkins, who was heading west across Rt. 301.
A witness told investigators the trooper entered the intersection after the traffic signal changed and said Hopkins was crossing Rt. 301 on a green signal.
