Michael McGovern arrested in Ocean City after fleeing, hitting cop with car
A Pennsylvania man was arrested early Saturday morning in Ocean City and faces a laundry list of charges after a drug-related stop turned into a foot and vehicular pursuit and a bicycle cop being struck by a car.
Police say that Michael Joseph McGovern, a 30-year-old Williamsport, Pa. resident, tried to sell marijuana and Ecstasy to an undercover Ocean City Police Department detective just before 2 a.m. When officers attempted to arrest him, he fled.
A short time later, Ocean City bicycle officers found McGovern trying to leave the area in his car. A struggle ensued when officers tried to apprehend him as he entered the vehicle. During this time, McGovern was able to start his car and put it into reverse.
As he moved backwards, one of the bicycle cops was struck and dragged on the driver's side of the car. He was eventually able to escape by falling outside the vehicle and under the driver's side door.
After a short vehicular pursuit, McGovern bailed out of his car on the west side of Coastal Highway, then jumped into a canal in the area of 21st Street and the bay. He was then tracked to an area seven blocks away, where Maryland State Police, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies joined in the search.
McGovern was eventually found at 4:38 a.m. in a condominium, where he was taken into custody. The bicycle cop was treated and released from Atlantic General Medical Center for injuries to his hand and arm.
McGovern faces the following charges:
-Two counts of distribution of a controlled dangerous substance
-Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident
-First-degree and second-degree assault
-Assault on a law enforcement officer
-Resisting arrest
-Fleeing and alluding
-Reckless and negligent driving
