There are heat advisories and warnings in 17 states, from Texas to Michigan, and the sweltering conditions aren't expected to let up anytime soon.

If temperatures reach 100 or above in Oklahoma City today, it would be the 28th day it's done so this year. It's even worse in western Oklahoma, where in recent weeks temperatures of 110 or above have been nothing unusual.

In Chicago, city officials say a half-dozen cooling centers will remain open.

Temperatures as high as 105 are expected in Illinois.

Cooling centers also have been open in Detroit for people who can't get relief at home.

In Missouri, an autopsy is planned today for a 55 year-old man who died at a homeless camp in Springfield Saturday. Police believe the heat may have killed him.
