A 7-month-old boy and his 16-year-old sitter who disappeared from Baltimore Friday evening were located in Northeast early Monday morning.
Police say the baby, Ki'Yauhn Birch, and the teenager were found in the 4400 block of Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue early Monday morning. The baby was healthy and unharmed.
The teenager, Jonae Boozer, has been taken into custody. She is charged with two counts of child abduction, one count of second-degree assault and one count of fourth-degree burglary and is being charged as an adult, according to WBAL.
“I wanted to sit down and cry but I had to find my baby,” said Whitney McGee, the baby’s mother.
Police say Ki'Yauhn Birch was left in Boozer's care at the boy's father's home in the 1100 block of Lyndhurst Street on Friday evening, but was reported missing after the boy's parents were unable to find Boozer or the child.
“I had gotten some tips that she was obsessed by babies but I never knew something like that,” said Charles Birch, the child’s father.
Birch says Boozer was a friend of a friend and stopped by his home, AP reports. She asked for a cigarette and he left her to watch the baby while he went to a store.
Boozer and the baby were gone by the time he returned.
The child's grandfather says the family is "devastated", including the child's father who says he just "trusted someone he didn't know." He says he had never heard of Boozer before, and was told by other family members that she was a runaway from a group home.
Boozer remains in police custody at this time. It's unclear if charges are pending.
