BOWIE, Md. (AP) — Prince George's County officials are planning to deploy mobile speed cameras at more than 100 sites near county schools.

The Washington Examiner reports divers would be fined $40 if they are caught speeding 12 mph or more over the speed limit in school zones. The county's revenue office projects the program will generate about $7.5 million in the next fiscal year.

Of the 113 proposed locations, 55 are in established school zones.

County Executive Rushern Baker is implementing a program authorized by the County Council in 2009. Former County Executive Jack Johnson never started the program, saying it amounted to an extra tax.

County Council Chairwoman Ingrid Turner says it will lead to safer driving habits around schools. But critics say the program is more focused on generating money.
