Md. county to hear more on privatization push

The all-Republican board scheduled a hearing Tuesday in Frederick on a consultant's recommendations for outsourcing many government services.

The meeting is meant mainly for county workers.

A similar session last week drew an estimated 500 people who mostly opposed the plan.

The consultant concluded the county could save $84 million to $109 million over five years by contracting with private companies for services such as public works, community development, and parks and recreation.

Commissioners President Blaine Young says no decisions have been made about outsourcing. But he says changes are needed to avoid looming budget deficits.

Two more hearings are scheduled this month on the report.
