Updated: July 19, 2011 - 01:20 pm
A woman reported to be suicidal led police on a chase in Frederick County, crashed her car into oncoming traffic on the bridge over Catoctin Creek, and then died after she jumped from a bridge or was thrown from her vehicle, authorities said.
Police were called early Tuesday morning about a woman said to be suicidal.
When a deputy spotted the woman' car at a gas station, she sped off. The deputy chased her. She was later identified as Michele L. Estep, 21, of Westminster, Md.
On U.S. 340, Estep’s car was going west in an eastbound lane when she rammed into another vehicle on the bridge over Catoctin Creek shortly before 1 a.m.
The driver then jumped off of the bridge while fleeing police, ABC7 News reports.
When the driver could not be found, a Maryland State Police helicopter joined the search.
Police say the woman’s body was later found.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office says eastbound lanes of U.S. 340 were closed for several hours during the investigation.
