All lanes at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Glebe Road in Arlington have reopened following a crash that left a police officer with serious injuries.

Authorities say the Arlington County police officer, identified as a 40-year-old man, was responding to a call for a disturbance in a bar at Ballston Commons Mall when the cruiser he was driving collided with a car at the intersection around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Detective Crystal Nosal says the officer is in serious condition at a local hospital, and the car’s driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The officer is a five-year veteran of the department, ABC7 reports.

Patrick Cook, who is staying at a nearby Comfort Inn, tells ABC7 that the sound of the crash woke him up, but he did not hear any tires screeching or car horns before the impact.

Two lanes have been reopened in the area, but much of the intersection is expected to remain closed through this morning’s rush hour. One northbound lane of Glebe Road and the westbound lane on Washington Boulevard to access Interstate 66 are back open. Delays are expected.
