RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed are following a "pollution diet" intended to restore the environmentally damaged estuary by 2025.

The progress report was issued Monday at a meeting of the Chesapeake Executive Council's annual meeting in Richmond.

The federal czar for the cleanup program, Jeff Corbin, told governors from three states and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson that the six states in the watershed and the District of Columbia"are on track" to achieve the first stage of pollution reduction goals.

The EPA's senior adviser on the bay's restoration said the achievements have been reached by measures large and small, from grass buffers to limit runoff into the bay to sewage plant improvements.

The governors from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland are attending the council's meeting.
