Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai accused in secret U.S. lobbying plot
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - A Kashmiri-born man accused of acting as an agent for the Pakistani government while participating in a secret lobbying effort is due in federal court in Virginia for a detention hearing.
Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday pending a hearing Thursday afternoon to determine whether he will remain in custody or be allowed to go free as his court case continues. The hearing is set for 2 p.m. at U.S. District Court in Alexandria.
Fai is accused of acting as an unregistered agent for a foreign government. Prosecutors say he worked to influence Congress and to develop contacts at the White House and State Department, under the supervision of a senior member of Pakistan's spy agency.
Fai is executive director of the Kashmiri American Council.
