Virginia General A$$embly: Is it owned by Va. businesses?
July 24, 2011 - 12:14 pm
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The cost of keeping Virginia legislators in office is paid almost entirely by business interests in Virginia. And those interests say it's just a cost of doing business.
An analysis of itemized campaign contribution reports filed last week shows that 99.61 percent of the campaign donations to incumbent state legislators since January 2010 came from businesses or lobbyists and lobbying firms who represent them.
The analysis, done by the nonprofit and nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project, showed that candidates challenging incumbents got only 4 one-hundredths of a percent of their contributions from business givers.
Candidates seeking open seats got three-tenths of a percent from the same sector.
