RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say they'll have extra troopers on the highways this Fourth of July weekend.
The increased presence is part of the agency's annual Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort, known as Operation CARE. Seventy-five percent of the state police uniformed work force will be on patrol Friday through Monday.
During last year's Fourth of July holiday period, Operation CARE resulted in 152 drunken driving arrests, 10,880 speeding tickets and 2,755 reckless driving citations. State police investigated 744 traffic crashes, and there were six fatalities.
