The Washington Animal Rescue League came to the rescue of more than a dozen animals Tuesday that were scheduled to become homeless again when a West Virginia animal shelter shuts it's doors next week.

A Fairmont, W.Va. shelter operated by the Marion County Humane Society lost its government contract recently, forcing them to move hundreds of dogs and cats to other facilities.

The Washington League picked up nine dogs and five cats for transfer.

"Our mission mandates that we rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals who have nowhere else to go," League President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman says. "We'll find them permanent homes where they will be cherished family members for the rest of their lives."

The League also picked up 12 dogs that were at risk of euthanization at a Buckhannon, W.Va. shelter. Two 6-week-old puppies were among the rescued.

They expect that the dogs arriving Tuesday will be available for adoption in about two weeks.
