On May 13, 2011, Stafford County Sheriff's Sgt. Lance Barley responded to the Ennstone Aggregate Plant on Kings Highway for a report of the theft of electrical copper wires.
Detectives set up a surveillance and on May 19, 2011, caught and arrested Smith. He was subsequently charged with possession of burglary tools and unlawful entry. A two-month investigation led to the arrest of seven others.
The wires controlled the power to large conveyor belts at the plant.
The facility had been closed for several months but was in the process of re-opening when the theft was discovered.
Between 1,500 – 2,000 feet wire, valued at $350,000.000, was stolen, police said. Total damage to the plant is estimated to be about $1.2 million dollars.
