Albert Haynesworth pleads no contest
Former Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth pleaded no contest Monday in connection with the alleged groping of a waitress at a hotel bar.
Haynesworth, 30, pleaded no contest to a charge of simple assault. As part of the plea, he is required to perform 160 hours community service, stay out of trouble and stay away from victim.
"I do not contest the government's proffer of the facts in this case," he said in court Monday.
He was initially charged with misdemeanor sexual abuse.
Haynesworth was accused of sliding his credit card into the bra of a waitress and touching her breast during a birthday party at the W hotel in February. His lawyer maintained that that the accusation was false and that Haynesworth would defend himself at a trial set for this week.
Haynesworth’s attorney had previously said he believed the accusation was trumped up because of Haynesworth's celebrity status and wealth. Prosecutors earlier offered a plea deal in which the sexual abuse charge would be dropped in exchange for Haynesworth pleading guilty to simple assault. Haynesworth declined earlier.
Haynesworth had a tumultuous recent run with the Redskins. The Redskins shipped Albert Haynesworth to the New England Patriots for a 2013 fifth-round draft pick.
Haynesworth, who last season was in the second year of a seven-year, $100 million contract, was suspended without pay for the final four games of 2010 for "conduct detrimental to the club" and feuded regularly with coach Mike Shanahan.
He also skipped off-season workouts and failed to pass a conditioning test at the start of training camp.
In January, one month before the sexual abuse accusation was made, Haynesworth was accused of road rage in Fairfax County, Va., by a man who claimed he was tailgated and then assaulted by the All-Pro defensive tackle.
On his way out of the courthouse, Haynesworth’s attorney, A. Scott Bolden, asked if Haynesworth offered money to the victim to get her to drop the charges.
"Absolutely not. Absolutely not,” he said.
