Supporters say the replacement would be a clean-energy alternative; an alternative fuels campus with a natural-gas fueling station, an energy museum, shops and 500 new townhomes.

The plan has no developer or funding as of yet, though.

For decades, the Genon coal-burning plant has been repeatedly fined, to the tune of more than $275,000 in 2011 alone.

"This plant has repeatedly been subject to environmental complaints," Gregory Staple, the CEO of the American Clean Skies Foundaion, says. "At some point, you have to say enough is enough.

In a statement, Genon spokeswoman Misty Allen says that the concept put forth by the Clean Skies Foundation is "just a fantasy" and that they have made no announcement regarding the potential shutdown of the plant.
