CLINTON, Md. (AP) - Angela Alsobrooks has made community outreach a top priority in her first year as state's attorney for Maryland's Prince George's County.
Alsobrooks says in an interview with The Associated Press that she's divided the prosecutors handling major crimes into the county's six police districts.
That means they get to build relationships with the police officers who patrol the streets and the neighbors who live there. She's also been touring the county with employees.
Alsobrooks says she wants to deter crime and to encourage county residents to think of prosecutors as more than just attorneys. She says the office has the power to do things as diverse as close down crack houses to discouraging truancy.
The effort could help in a county that has struggled with violent crime.
