America's 9/11 Ride is heading to the Pentagon right now, and it's expected to cause some traffic tie-ups throughout the area.

Lanes are expected to be blocked on the eastbound Dulles Greenway and Dulles Toll Road in the early afternoon. I-66 eastbound is also expected to be closed inside the Capital Beltway as the riders come through.

Metro advises bus customers traveling to or near the Pentagon and Crystal City should expect delays. Metrobus route 5A will provide service from all regular bus stops to and from Dulles Airport on Friday afternoon. “Metro will operate extra buses on the 5A route to compensate for the expected delays; however, customers should consider alternate routes or allow plenty of extra travel time due to expected traffic,” the agency said.

The riders are expected to enter Loudoun County from Maryland between 2 p.m. and about 4 p.m. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police will be stopping traffic at the intersections on Route 15 from the Maryland line to the Leesburg town line.

Traffic from roads on the east side of Route 15 will be able to travel north. All traffic wishing to go south must find an alternate route or experience major delays, police said.

The procession continues onto the Route 15/7 Bypass east to the Dulles Greenway. Access from the Bypass to the Dulles Greenway will be closed to traffic. Once on the Greenway, riders will remain in the far left lane. General vehicle traffic will remain in the far right lane. The same arrangement will be in place along the Dulles Toll Road.

Heavy traffic congestion and significant delays are expected for drivers traveling to and from the airport on the afternoon of Aug. 19.
