The letters released Monday reveal that two days before O'Malley announced plans to sponsor a same-sex marriage bill, Archbishop Edwin O'Brien of Baltimore urged that he reconsider the move.

O'Brien said in a July 20 letter that sponsoring the bill would "deeply conflict" with O'Malley's Catholic faith.

The Washington Post reports O'Malley responded, saying "when shortcomings in our laws bring about a result that is unjust, I have a public obligation to try to change that injustice."

A same-sex marriage bill cleared the state Senate this year but was pulled from the House floor after vote-counters determined they were a few votes short of a majority.
