Back to School 2011: Public school students head back to class

Today is the first day of school for public students in D.C. and Prince George’s County.

At Parkdale High School in Riverdale, students will get a big welcome back from the Schools Superintendent William Hite. He’ll be there at 9 a.m. Monday to take a tour and greet students and staff.
Mayor Vincent Gray and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will welcome students back at Eastern High School in Southeast.
A number of parents spent Sunday doing some last-minute shopping for school supplies.
Over the weekend, thousands of volunteers helped clean up schools before the start of classes: throwing away trash, painting and planting flowers.
