Child, 5, dies in Charles County house fire
A 5-year-old boy was killed and his 2-year-old sister was seriously injured when a fire broke out in a Charles County home Thursday morning.
Seven people were at home, including the mother, Shevon Conley, 31, and six children, ages 1- to 11-years-old.
The blaze started around 6:09 a.m. in the one story home in the 6800 block of Arbor Lane in Bryans Road, Md.
Two landscape contractors working in the area used a ladder and helped lure a 3-year-old out of a back bedroom, officials said. Firefighters rescued a 2-year-old from a back bedroom as well.
The body of the 5-year-old boy was found in the room where the fire started, fire officials stated. The 3-year-old suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Civic Medical Center in LaPlata with critical injuries, officials say.
The others were all able to make it out unharmed.
The fire is being investigated.
Officials say firefighters were previously called to the house on May 16th for the smell of smoke. Firefighters searched the home never found a source of smoke.
Fire officials stated that there wasn’t any evidence of working smoke detectors in the house.
