Civil War reenactment in Fairfax County this weekend
August 12, 2011 - 07:41 am
CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) - If the 100-degree heat kept you from attending the ceremonies to mark the 150th anniversary of the first Battle of Manassas, this weekend's pleasant forecast offers a more hospitable opportunity to soak up some Civil War history in northern Virginia.
The annual Civil War Weekend Encampment at Fairfax County's Sully Historic Site in Chantilly will take place Saturday and Sunday. Re-enactors will demonstrate tactical exercises and military maneuvers, featuring artillery and cavalry.
The Sully home was completed in 1799 by Richard Bland Lee, northern Virginia's first congressman and an uncle of Robert E. Lee.
Both Union and Confederate troops crossed Sully's grounds during the Civil War.
